How To Treat Newbies In Paintball

My very first game of paintball ended fast and with a whole lot of confusion. Naturally, I wanted to act experienced, so I wouldn't ask anyone for questions. You can expect the majority of 'newbies' to act similarly because they don't want to be singled out as the newbie who asks lots of questions.

This fear of being singled out made my first day of paintball a living hell. Nobody talked to me, nobody helped me, and even the ref's didn't call the few people I marked out. If you come upon a newbie with these or similar actions, help him out.

Who knows, you might just be keeping the next Bob Long in the sport. In the past, I have seen countless lists about what newbies should do to get better at the sport, but I have never seen a list to the experienced player about how to treat a newbie, so here goes:

Treat Newbies With The Same Respect. Treat them like you treat your comrades. Nothing will make them feel more comfortable about playing paintball than making them feel that there is one person that is being nice to them.
Explain how important it is having safety gears. Nothing is worse than a blind newbie (or a newbie blinding anyone else for that matter).
Help them out with their Paintball Gun. If their barrel comes off, don't tell them that they should make a suicide run because their gun is broken, help them out a bit.
Squeegie their barrel if they need it. Don't forget that a new player can eliminate any player, and a straight ball or a curved ball could mean the difference between winning a match or losing one.
When asked, answer them TRUTHFULLY. If they ask you if a paintball hurts, don't tell the story about how Uncle Bob got hit in the ribcage with a paintball and nearly died, just say it only stings for a few seconds and may give you a bit of bruises.
Explain things properly. You can't expect a newbie to understand this kind of talk: "Yeah, I got an RVA on my P68SC and I think that I might rig her up with some HPA after I buy my KP2" Remember, that they still don't know what terminologies are being used in the game.
Don't lie. I can't put in writing how angry I was when I grabbed the center-flag and my team was laughing at me for being gullible enough to believe that. It seriously sucks.
Help them on the field. If they are in the same bunker as you and they say they want to go some bunker, provide them with some cover fire. Don't just shove them out of the bunker and take their spot.
Give advice. If they ask you to give them cover-fire to what you know is a death trap, then don't just play along, tell them that another place is better, just try and prevent them from getting themselves eliminated.

Basic Rules In Paintball

Want to play Paintball but don't know how? Well here's a good news for you! I'll be providing you some of the important information about the basics of Paintball. So pay attention folks!

Before Playing Paintball or just even stepping into the field or paintball arena make sure you have this checklist:

The key to a fun game of paintball is to have everyone on the same page. It only takes a couple of minutes, but quickly going through the rules each time will help maximize your paintball experience.

Playing Grounds and Boundaries

Before any game begins, be sure to speak a walk around the field and clearly indicate the boundaries to everyone who will play. Make sure that your field is not giant or small. A field a hundred yards long and fifty yards wide is great for 3 on 3, but in the event you have sixteen people, you need more room. Establish beginning bases on opposite sides of the field and, if feasible, make it so they are not in view of each other. Note that in the event you are playing on a speedball work with no trees or brush, this won't be feasible.

Mark The Dead Zone

Make sure everyone knows the location of the dead zone (or staging area) and knows to not shoot in or near it. The dead zone is an area that is off of the field where people go after they are eliminated. Usually it is also where additional paintball gear and paint is left between games. The dead zone ought to ideally be far off the field that eliminated players can remove their masks to tidy them without risk of being hit by players still on the field.

Objective In Playing Paintball

Make sure everyone knows what the objective of the game is. Are you playing a simple elimination game? How about capture the flag or middle flag? Broadcast clearly any special rules or objectives.

Time Limit

Establish a time limit for the game. Nobody likes to play in a game that lasts forever with neither team moving. There's three primary ways of timing a game: start timing from the outset or else start timing from when the first person gets out. Keep in mind that long games are not fun for those that get out at right at the beginning, so keep them short and sweet.

Team Up

Divide players up into fair teams. If some people are new to the sport and others are more experienced, divide them up between the teams. In general, try to keep the number of people on each team about equal. If there's only a few people playing it is not hard to keep in mind who is on your team, but if there's larger groups of people, tie some colored tape or cloth around your arms or guns to identify different teams.

Game ON!

The game begins when both teams are set at their respective bases. One team calls out that they are prepared, the other team responds that they are also prepared, and then the first team calls "Game On" and the game begins.

Hits

A player is hit if a paintball leaves a solid, nickel-sized mark anywhere on the player's body or equipment. Some variations of paintball don't count gun hits or need multiple hits on the arms or legs. Most professional fields and tournaments, though, count any hit on a person or their equipment. Splatter often occurs when a paintball does not break on a person but on a nearby surface and then paint bounces onto the player, but this does not count as a hit unless it forms a solid mark on the player.

Paint Checks

In the event you think you might have been hit but cannot tell for sure (such as if your back was hit, but you cannot tell if the paint ball broke), you can call a paint check. Shout "Paint Check" and the closest player to you (on your team or the other team) will come and check you. In the event you are hit, you will then exit the field, otherwise everyone returns to their earlier position and the game is resumed when the player who initiated the paint check shouts "Game On!".

Say "Hit"

When a player is hit, they must then raise their gun over their head, shout that they are hit, and then quickly leave the field to the dead area. Be sure to keep your gun over your head and to shout that you are hit everytime you come across new players.

Victory

When one team has done the necessary objectives, all players still on the field ought to be notified. Do not remove masks until barrel plugs or barrel covers have been placed on all loaded guns. After you have played one game, try out a brand new game type and repeat the steps from the outset.

Competition could be good

Daniel Forest sees a Holiday Inn Express under construction next door to his U.S.A. Motor Lodge in Newington and sees an opportunity.

Although many, mostly independent, motels already line both sides of the Berlin Turnpike, Forest said a new Holiday Inn Express could draw more travelers to the road, possibly filling him with spill-off business.

"They will bring in more competition to the turnpike," Forest said. "People could see their higher prices and then come down here."
Unlike other hoteliers on the stretch of road that offer weekly and monthly rates, the U.S.A. Motor Lodge focuses strictly on nightly customers, something the Holiday Inn Express also specializes in.

Tax rebate does nothing

The owners of Cedar Mountain Stoves, LLC on the Berlin Turnpike in Newington hoped their business would pick up when the federal government offered a tax rebate on their wood, pellet and gas stoves; but the response was minimal.

“Business is terrible right now,” owner Craig Ryans said. “We, as a dealer, get very little support.”

Although summer is not typically the best time of year to sell new stoves, the business has survived only by providing service on stoves. Cedar Mountain opened in December 2005, and 2009 was the worst full year to date.

This year might finish even worse, Ryans said, as revenues are down nearly 70 percent from the first months of last year. Much like the housing market, stoves are priced to sell, if people can afford the investment.

For the summer, Cedar Mountain has decreased the prices on its stoves by $1,000 or more; and that, coupled with the tax rebate, means customer potentially could buy a stove at half off.

“If you are in a financial state to buy, now is the time to buy,” owner Harold Davison said. “The trouble is most of us don’t have $3,000 or $4,000 lying around.”

Cut Out The Median

As the traffic counts diminish in front of Pet Supplies Plus in Wethersfield, president Jason Humphries wishes the Connecticut Department of Transportation would open access to both sides of the road.

The median running down the Berlin Turnpike in places is a wide expanse of grass while in others it is a simple metal barrier. Although the stretch of route is ripe with left-turn cut-throughs and turn-arounds, the barrier doesn’t make it easy to get from one side to the other.

“Anything the DOT can do would make our lives easier,” Humphries said. “I don’t want my customers to have to worry about the road.”

Gunning down rivals

The business of offering vintage military clothing, equipment and collectibles went straight downhill over the past five years, said Bill Moore, co-owner of Military Specialties Inc. on the Berlin Turnpike in Newington.

When a competing store opened up on the same block in October, Moore said, business went from bad to worse, even though Military Specialties Inc. has a 25-year foothold on the neighborhood.

Army Barracks opened Oct. 2 on the Berlin Turnpike offering many of the same items as Military Specialties. Business has risen slowly but steadily, said assistant store manager Kris Lewis.

One range of products Army Barracks offers beyond Military Specialties is Airsoft guns, which look and feel like the real thing but shoot pellets. The guns are a big seller, Lewis said, and are gaining popularity in the area. The Airsoft businesses spins off into other areas of the store, as customers buy clothing and equipment to use when playing with their mock guns, Lewis said.

Is Pakistan Secretly Helping Taliban?

KABUL/WASHINGTON - (Reuters) – Pakistan was actively collaborating with the Taliban in Afghanistan while accepting U.S. aid, new U.S. military reports showed, a disclosure likely to increase the pressure on Washington's embattled ally.

The revelations by the organization Wikileaks emerged as Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, warned of greater NATO casualties in Afghanistan as violence mounts over the summer.

It also came as the Taliban said they were holding captive one of two U.S. servicemen who strayed into insurgent territory, and that the other had been killed. The reported capture will further erode domestic support for America's nine-year war.

Documents leaked by Wikileaks said representatives from Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence met directly with the Taliban in secret strategy sessions to organize militant networks fighting U.S. soldiers.

The White House condemned the leak, saying it could threaten national security and endanger the lives of Americans. Pakistan said leaking unprocessed reports from the battlefield was irresponsible.

U.S. national security adviser Jim Jones said the leak would not affect "our ongoing commitment to deepen our partnerships with Afghanistan and Pakistan".

The revelations were contained in more than 90,000 classified documents which U.S. officials focused on the period leading to the launch of President Barack Obama's Afghan strategy last December, when he authorized deployment of 30,000 additional troops.

Violence in Afghanistan is at its highest of the 9-year-old war as the thousands of extra U.S. troops step up their campaign to drive insurgents out of their traditional heartland in the south.

"As we continue our force levels and our operations over the summer ... we will likely see further tough casualties and levels of violence," Admiral Mullen told reporters in Kabul on Sunday.

The United States has repeatedly urged Pakistan to hunt down militant groups, including some believed to have been nurtured by the ISI as strategic assets in Afghanistan and against arch rival India. Islamabad says it is doing all it can to fight the militancy, adding it was a victim of terrorism itself.

MISSING US SOLDIERS

Two U.S. servicemen were reported missing on Friday after they failed to return in a vehicle they had taken from their compound in Kabul, the NATO-led force said.

A spokesman for the NATO-led force declined to comment on the Taliban's announcement it was holding one of the men, both from the U.S. Navy.

The Navy described both men as still missing.

"We have the body of the dead soldier and the other one who is alive. We have taken them to a safe place," said Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid by telephone from an undisclosed location.

Rumors circulated in local and international media about the fate of the missing men and how they had managed to stray into an insurgent-controlled area in Logar province, a short but dangerous 100 km (60 miles) drive south of the capital. One provincial official said alcohol was found in their vehicle.

Last month was the deadliest for foreign troops since 2001, with more than 100 killed, and civilian deaths have also risen as ordinary Afghans are increasingly caught in the crossfire.

The only other foreign soldier believed held by the Taliban is Idaho National Guardsman Bowe Bergdahl, whose capture in June last year triggered a massive manhunt. His captors have issued videos of him denouncing the war, in what the U.S. military has called illegal propaganda.
